Harvard University, our nation’s oldest institute of higher learning, was founded in the year 1636. It received its name from its first benefactor, a young pastor named John Harvard, who upon his death bequeathed his library and half his estate to the university.
The fact that Harvard was originally founded by evangelical Christians to promote the Christian faith is unmistakable as can be seen from its charter laid down in 1646. Harvard made very clear in the document its goal for its students:
“Let every student be plainly instructed, and earnestly pressed to consider well, the main end of his life and studies is, to know God and Jesus Christ which is eternal life and therefore to lay Christ in the bottom, as the only foundation of all sound knowledge and learning.”
How times have changed! There is no bigger source of secular Christian antipathy today than this once great institution. Where it began with the mission to understand and teach others that Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life”, it now worships with orgiastic fervor at the alter of materialistic atheism, spreading the doctrines of man-caused climate change, egalitarianism, and mankind as a biological accident.
The recent words of Harvard legal scholar, Mark Tushnet, reflect the simmering hatred for Christianity that grips much of institution’s faculty today. In a blog post late last week, Tushnet boasts that conservatives and Christians have lost the culture wars and now the only question that remains for the secularists is “how to deal with the losers.”
While I do not accept that the culture wars are over, there’s no question that we have been getting a serious butt whipping the last few decades on issues that Christians can and should win.
Our society has been terminating new life in the womb for forty-three years. Despite all we understand now about how early heartbeats and brain waves start in a developing child, the destruction of life continues unabated.
The gay agenda has now been largely implemented. Our entertainment media has mainstreamed the lifestyle as an equal alternative to heterosexuality. We have gone from “don’t ask, don’t tell” in our military to gays openly serving. In fact, we have now confirmed an openly gay chief of the Army.
And of course, our Supreme Court overlords have decreed that homosexual marriage is a right. Any Christian refusing to knuckle under based on Biblical truth will be dealt with severely by the government and the media. It looks like gay activists are rapidly running out of things to act out on.
And now the attack is focused on blurring the lines between male and female in a clear effort to create societal chaos and discord and to further ingrain rigid conformity to governmental will. You really think the Left cares about transgendering people? They are just the latest steppingstone to hard tyranny.
Further comments by Tushnet confirm the tyrannical bent of those who can’t defend their views but insist on imposing them. He answers his own question about “how to deal with the losers” by essentially equating Christians with Nazis.
He states, “My own judgment is that taking a hard line (‘You lost, live with it’) is better than trying to accommodate the losers.” And then adds, “And taking a hard line seemed to work reasonably well in Germany and Japan after 1945.”
Now this is a man who is supposed to be learned, a seeker of knowledge and a purveyor of tolerance. You see however, that once the Left gains a measure of control, tolerance can no longer be tolerated. Rigid conformity is necessary to preserve the absolute power of the ruling masterminds.
What does it mean then if Tushnet’s proposal is followed and Christians are treated as Nazis or the imperial Japanese after World War II? Will churches be closed down? Will all Christian symbols be publicly banned? Will publishing the Bible become felonious? Will practicing Christians be jailed or sent to reeducation camps?
Ten years ago I would have laughed at the prospect of such questions even being articulated. Now I think we have to consider such scenarios as possibilities given our society’s trajectory.
Tushnet is a prominent scholar at one of our most prestigious universities. Given his comments above, he and those that share his mindset must then believe that the Christian practices of worshipping a Creator; loving your neighbor as yourself; being charitable, honest and trustworthy; and believing marriage is exclusively between one man and one woman are as dangerous to society as the Nazi beliefs of racial superiority and genocide.
This is derangement on clear display and it is metastasizing rapidly. Academia has descended to the point of being a “no fly zone” for Christians. The news and entertainment media have become the mouthpiece for anti-Christianity bigotry. Our federal government now has a bureaucracy steeped with militant secularists that will continue to ramp up harassment and persecution of Christians and their beliefs.
I know how dark things look now, but take heart! We are on the side of right and we will ultimately win. Christians just need to start showing up and engaging. Every time we do, we win. We have the best arguments to make and we have the power of God behind us. We will turn back this evil tide. Put your trust in Him and victory is assured!
